معركة مؤتة الخالدة
3,000 expeditionary soldiers — Dispatched to avenge the murder of the Prophet's envoy Al-Harith ibn Umayr al-Azdi by Shurahbil.
12–14 Shuhada (including Zayd, Ja'far, and Ibn Rawahah)
100,000–200,000 Imperial Byzantine & Christian Arab confederates
Heavy casualties (several thousands estimated in disarray)
After the three designated commanders were martyred, the army chose Khalid. At night, Khalid switched vanguard with rearguard, and right wing with left wing, raising huge clouds of dust. The Byzantines believed massive reinforcements had arrived from Madinah and dared not pursue as Khalid executed a disciplined retreat.
Zayd fell holding the banner, Ja'far took it until both arms were severed, then Ibn Rawahah fulfilled his poetic vow.
Thabit ibn Aqram handed the banner to Khalid, who personally engaged until nine swords broke in his hand.
Reorganizing ranks to simulate thousands of fresh reinforcements and safely withdrawing the entire army.

The Prophet ﷺ informed the people of the martyrdom of Zayd, Ja'far and Ibn Rawahah before the news arrived, saying: 'Then the flag was taken by a Sword from the Swords of Allah (Khalid) until Allah opened victory through him.'
