Nur al-Din Mahmud Zangi

Nur al-Din Mahmud Zangi (رحمه الله) was the saintly warrior-king who laid the moral, spiritual, and military foundations for the liberation of Jerusalem. Classical historians regarded him as one of the most upright rulers in Islamic history, often compared to Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz. He unified Syria, dispatched Shirkuh and Salahuddin to secure Egypt, built madrasas and hospitals throughout Damascus and Aleppo, and personally commissioned the intricate cedar-wood pulpit (*Minbar*) to be placed inside Al-Aqsa Mosque decades before its actual liberation. In battle, he fought in the front ranks with two quivers of arrows, praying with face pressed against the dust: 'O Allah, give victory to Your religion, not to Mahmud; who is this dog Mahmud that he should be granted victory?'
