Gazi Osman Pasha

Gazi Osman Nuri Pasha (رحمه الله) was the legendary Ottoman field marshal whose defense of Plevna in 1877 astonished the world and revolutionized modern defensive warfare. During the Russo-Turkish War, Osman entrenched his 40,000 soldiers at the crossroad town of Plevna in Bulgaria. Constructing an innovative network of interconnected earthwork trenches and arming his infantry with repeating Peabody-Martini and Winchester rifles, he repulsed three massive Russian assaults personally observed by Tsar Alexander II, inflicting catastrophic casualties on the imperial invaders. When food and ammunition were exhausted after five months, he led a daring breakout attempt across the river Vid, was wounded, and finally surrendered. Tsar Alexander II returned his ceremonial saber in admiration of his peerless valor. The famous *Plevne Marşı* anthem was composed in his eternal honor.
