Fahreddin Pasha (Ömer Fahrettin)

Ömer Fahreddin Pasha (رحمه الله), universally honored as the 'Tiger of the Desert' (*Çöl Kaplanı*), was the last Ottoman governor and commander of Madinah al-Munawwarah. When World War I engulfed the Middle East and British-backed forces severed the Hejaz Railway, Fahreddin Pasha successfully protected the Sacred Relics of the Prophet ﷺ, carefully packing and transporting them via special armored train to the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, where they remain safely preserved today. Besieged for two years and seven months with all supply lines severed, he and his men survived on roasted locusts and date stones. Standing before the Prophet's Sacred Chamber (*Al-Rawdah al-Sharifah*), he delivered an emotional address in tears: 'O Prophet of Allah! We will never abandon you!' He held out until January 1919—seventy-two days after the Ottoman Empire had officially surrendered in World War I—only being physically detained by his own starving officers who carried him out while he clung to the Prophet's gate.
